At Oceanwingz Paragliding thailand School, the journey from novice to skilled paraglider is a structured and exhilarating process designed to ensure you gain confidence and competence every step of the way. Here’s an overview of how you progress from zero to hero in the world of paragliding:
Basic course (P1+P2)
Ground Handling
Your training begins with ground handling sessions next to the beach. The consistent sea breeze helps keep the wings stable, making it easier for beginners to learn the basics. This stable wind environment not only makes the learning process quicker but also more efficient. The constant availability of the sea breeze means there’s almost always an opportunity to train, providing a significant advantage over other training locations that rely on less predictable wind conditions.
Training Duration
Typically, students spend about 5-7 days on the initial training phase, depending on individual progress. During this period, you’ll engage in approximately 7-10 hours of ground handling. However, this duration can vary based on each person’s ability to grasp and apply the techniques. If you’re quick to master ground handling, you can progress to your first flight sooner.
First Flight
Once you’ve demonstrated sufficient skill and control during ground handling, you’ll be ready for your first flight. This moment is both thrilling and rewarding, marking the transition from ground training to actual flying. Under the careful supervision of our experienced instructors, you’ll experience the joy of soaring above the landscape, applying everything you’ve learned.
At Oceanwingz School, we understand that everyone learns at their own pace. Our instructors tailor the training to suit your individual needs, ensuring you build a solid foundation before moving on to more advanced techniques. Whether you advance quickly or take a bit more time, our goal is to provide you with the skills and confidence to enjoy paragliding safely and effectively.
Intermediate Course (P3)
After completing the basic course, you may not yet be capable of flying without supervision. If you feel ready to advance, the next step is the Intermediate P3 course. This course is designed to make you capable of soaring on the mountain and flying independently.
The Intermediate P3 course emphasizes:
- Advanced Ground Handling: More ground handling training for precise control, which becomes ingrained as muscle memory. The better your muscle memory, the safer you will be, as your body will respond automatically in any situation.
- Mountain Soaring: More airtime flying on the mountain to help you feel comfortable with the air conditions and dynamics.
- Takeoff and Landing: Mastering takeoff and landing, the most critical and potentially dangerous parts of paragliding. You’ll need to practice taking off and landing by yourself to build confidence and skill in these areas.
Completing the Intermediate P3 course means you can fly independently, fully equipped with the knowledge, skills, and muscle memory needed for safe and enjoyable paragliding.
Intermediate2 Course (P4)
If you’ve completed the P3 course and want to advance further, the next step is the Intermediate P4 Thermaling course. This course focuses on mastering the use of thermals, which are essential for achieving greater heights and longer flights.
What is a Thermal? A thermal is a column of rising air created by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface. As the sun heats different parts of the ground, warm air rises in pockets, creating upward currents. These thermals are crucial for paragliders because they allow you to gain altitude without relying solely on ridge or slope soaring.
Why Thermaling is Important Thermaling is the first step towards cross-country (XC) paragliding. By learning to locate and use thermals effectively, you can significantly extend your flight time and distance. Soaring with mountain winds can only get you so high, but thermals enable you to climb much higher, opening up new possibilities for exploration and adventure.
The Intermediate P4 Thermaling course will cover:
- Thermal Identification: How to identify potential thermal sources and signs in the environment.
- Thermal Entry and Centering: Techniques for entering a thermal efficiently and staying within its core to maximize lift.
- Advanced Air Management: Understanding air currents, thermal cycles, and how to use them to your advantage.
Mastering thermaling will elevate your paragliding skills, allowing you to embark on longer XC flights and experience the true freedom of the skies.
Advanced P5 Cross-Country (XC) Course
Once you’ve completed the P4 Thermaling course, the final step is the Advanced P5 XC course. This course focuses on long-distance flying and is essential for those who wish to compete in XC paragliding competitions.
What the P5 XC Course Covers
- Long-Distance Flying: Training on how to handle extended periods in the air, maintaining focus, and managing physical and mental stamina.
- Route Planning: Learning to plan and execute long-distance routes, taking into account weather conditions, terrain, and airspace regulations.
- Advanced Navigation: Utilizing GPS and other navigation tools to track progress and make real-time decisions during the flight.
- Safety and Risk Management: Strategies for managing risks during long flights, including emergency procedures and dealing with changing weather conditions.
Completing the P5 XC course equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in XC competitions and pursue ambitious cross-country flights with confidence.
